Onshore winds over the weekend brought visibility levels down somewhat. However, this was the last thing on the minds of our eighteen drift divers on Saturday afternooon. A late high water afforded a leisurely lunch between Saturday morning’s boat dive to Llachog Prahan and departure for Streamstown. Divers started to gather at the entry point from 4pm, with Cillian and Breffni aiming to have divers hitting the water for their first dive before 5pm. Two boats were used to drop divers at the mouth of Streamstown Bay, and collect them after each of their two underwater runs. The unrelenting speed of this drift pushes underwater sightseeing down the list of diver’s priorities, so for once poor vis barely registered in our divers’ consciousness. The main concern was how to get as far as possible, as fast as possible! Indeed, the competition between our intrepid drifters lingered well into their obligatory post dive comparisons in the ‘Bard’s Den’ pub. For argument’s sake, let’s just call it a tie!

Our next Streamstown Drift Dive takes place on Saturday 12th June. This dive is always a popular one, so early booking is advised.

You know summer is in the air when the May Bank Holiday weekend is on the horizon! If you don’t already have plans, consider a trip to Scubadive West. Our popular Streamstown Drift Dive takes place on Friday evening (30th April), with a pre dive briefing at 3pm so plenty of time to drive down that morning. We will run our daily boat diving schedule with dives taking place at 10am and 2pm. The weather forecast appears in our favour, and we will aim to visit some of our most popular dive sites; including the Julia T, Llachog Prahan, Thany Beag and who knows what other sites we may have discovered by then!

Any regular visitors to this part of Connemara will be delighted to know that the esteemed ‘Paddy Coyne’s’ pub in Tullycross will reopen in time for the May Bank Holiday weekend. This popular watering hole will also play host to the ‘Connemara Mussel Festival’ , taking place the same weekend.

Sunday’s drift dive lived up to its reputation, sweeping our intrepid divers along at record speeds. Fortunately, Streamstown Bay basked in sunlight throughout the adventure. The excellent visibility underwater meant that divers could literally see what was around the next bend. Some divers opted to just sit back and go with the flow, while certain ‘speed junkies’ swam hard with the current ensuring their position on the ‘Speed Leader Board’! All in all, each diver had fantastic fun while undertaking two runs on this underwater rollercoaster. Our next Streamstown Drift Dive takes place during the afternoon of Friday 30th April.

While Ireland tackled England on the pitch yesterday, twelve fearless divers answered Ireland’s call and faced the indomitable Streamstown Drift. This month’s squad was made up of seasoned drifters and some newcomers to the game. Fast play and swift moves were the order of the day, with Streamstown rejoicing in its reputation for speed. A fine day and weeks of settled weather ensured great water clarity in Streamstown Bay. Our plan allowed for a “game of two halves” (nonsensical phrase!); air and tide generally permits two runs at the drift dive. However, yesterday saw a handful of our team desert at half-time, in a bid to view the rugby game. Those who played on were rewarded with a second whimsical underwater journey and post game snacks of hot chocolate, and Creme Eggs.

The Team; 27th February 2010

This month’s squad was managed by Cillian Gray and included; James Moloney (definitely Drift Captain at this stage!), Lila Radola, Adrian Breslin, Nina Forsman, Cormac Logan, Fiona Logan, Rob Hunter, Hadrian Fawsitt, Terry O’ Brien, Ciaran Mooney, Keith Curley and Tracy Walsh. Well played guys n’ gals, and well done Ireland.
